Matheus Fonseca is the kind of artist who refuses to be put in a box. A Latin American singer-songwriter, he is gaining a foothold in the new Brazilian music scene by bringing a global, contemporary vibe, all while effortlessly blending languages and genres. Born in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, Matheus has created his own sound — a mix of MPB, samba, reggae, and jazz — and it's in this melting pot of influences where his music truly shines.

In 2023, he made waves by winning the Luiz Melodia Afro-Brazilian Music Award with “A Raiz”, and in 2024, he took home the prize at the Festival Nacional da Canção with “Rua A (Siricutico)”. But his journey, in his own words, is not about trophies. With a degree in Economics, Matheus didn’t start his career on stage — he started on the road. After an exchange program and a long trek along the Camino de Santiago, he decided to follow his gut and fully dive into music.

 

He packed up his guitar and moved to Europe, busking in the streets of southern England, then playing in hotels and restaurants all over Spain, before landing in Portugal. That’s where his time on The Voice really took off, especially after his live performance of “Soteropolitana” — a track of his own that quickly became a hit on social media in Brazil and Portugal.

A true troubadour at heart, Matheus has lived in places like Switzerland, Ecuador, Spain, and the United States. Every stop left its mark on his music, giving it a global flavor that connects with different cultures and sounds. For him, music isn’t just a way to express himself — it’s a bridge that connects people, stories, and emotions, no matter where they come from.

His latest album, “Latitude Zero (Vol. 1)”, was recorded in Quito, right on the equator line — a spot that symbolizes his balance between north and south, the local and the global, the personal and the collective. The album isn’t just a nod to his Brazilian roots; it’s an invitation to journey through a sonic landscape that blends jazz, samba, reggae and bossa nova in a fresh, sophisticated, and undeniably captivating way. It’s the work of an artist who knows exactly where he’s been — and where he’s going.
