Biography
Born in São Gonçalo, in Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Fonseca built a rare trajectory: he left Brazil with an Economics degree, walked the Camino de Santiago, and came back from the journey with the right calling: music. Since then, he has turned road into repertoire and displacement into artistic identity.
Winner of the Luiz Melodia Prize and the Festival Nacional da Canção, his path is told more through what he has lived than what he has won. He began performing on the streets of Bournemouth and Lisbon before moving on to bars, hotels, and festivals across Europe. He took part in The Voice Portugal, played seasons throughout Spain, and eventually settled in Geneva, Switzerland, where he recorded his debut album Enquanto a Terra Girar and released Soteropolitana, the song that would become his calling card.
His second album, Imigrante, was recorded in La Paz, Bolivia, at over four thousand meters above sea level, deepening a body of work shaped by passage and belonging. He then moved to Ecuador, where he recorded the double album Latitude Zero Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 — fittingly in Quito, sitting literally on the equator line — and premiered the complete work on the stage of Festival Equador Jazz, consolidating a Brazilian sound run through by the world.
The sole composer of his catalogue, and now based in Washington, D.C., Matheus has played the legendary Blues Alley and continues to perform in Portuguese, with detours into Spanish, English, and French; languages he picked up along the way. His music speaks the language of Brazilian song at its most lyrical: urban chronicle, sung narrative, lyrical mischief; songs that observe people and movement, humor that provokes without caricature, and poetry that finds depth without losing lightness.
With four albums released and lived experience across the five countries he has called home, Matheus is now preparing a new work in voice-and-guitar format, a return to the essential. A Brazilian artist with a defined identity, international baggage, and a stage presence forged on the street, and on the road of life.
